Usually, I am cold toward suggestions that the issue with eBooks is that there are technical problems or that the answer is a technical fix. However.
One that that's been obvious for decades is that nobody has yet developed a computer experience that is analogous to _riffling pages._ This is a very important technique when reading for knowledge, rather than pleasure, and it is astonishing how much you can pick out, in a right-brained sort of way, riffling twenty to fifty pages a second.
Logically you could do it all with Boolean search tools and so forth but the brain doesn't work that way. It's somehow very easy to know that you need something that was in a pink-shaded sidebar on a page with a camel on it than to search "ungulate erythrocyte anomalous." Even if you know how to spell erythrocyte, or even if your ebook's search feature is as good as Google's.
The odd thing is that we obviously have the hardware power to do it now; if we can present full-motion full-screen HD video, we ought to be able to riffle pages. But we can't.
I haven't lived with an e-Ink device but suspect it represents a giant step backwards in that regard.
