Re: PDF ebooks

Amazon wants people to buy from them directly, in their format. It allows
people to display PDF, because they know better than to lock people into a
single format. They alientate readers that way. But the more they encourage
people to purchase from them, in a format they OWN, the better for their
market plans. Amazon owns Mobi, and Kindle is tweaked Mobi.

Apple is still up in the air. They've set up their reader to take PDF, even
though there are other apps available that will already do that. Why do that
if they never intend PDF? But... The trick about eBookstore is that you need
a Mac to get the format done to their specs. Publishers I know are BUYING a
cheap Mac just to format for them.

In short, they both see money from the way they are doing it, above and
beyond the norm.
