Sorry, Kirk. But, you've either misread me or are mistaken on this.

Yes, PDF CAN have DRM. I never said it didn't. You definitely misread me
there, but that wasn't the point.

The point is, Amazon doesn't OWN Adobe. They own Mobi. It benefits them to
make the simple process of purchasing with Whispernet only for a product
they own the pipeline for. They ALLOW PDF books that are not DRMd to convert
for use on the Kindle only because they know offering a locked platform
turns off readers that might otherwise purchase a Kindle. Same reason other
proprietary types allow books from other sources on, but they try to
encourage you to use their bookstore by making it easy to purchase and load
remotely only what they offer...which is what they own the pipeline for.

Use the Nook, as another example. Nook will allow you to read for an hour a
day in the store without purchasing. You can go through a lot of short
stories or come back several times and read a novel, but it's only for
ebooks available for sale on their own system...the free reading, I mean.
They are HOPING the reader will get to the end of the hour and choose to buy
what he/she was reading. They make using their products
beneficial...easy...for the readers, and they make more money that way.

And, you're wrong about the iBookstore. To properly format for inclusion,
the final steps must be done on a Mac. That's why so many people are using
aggregators to get there and uploading the content in other file types to be
converted by others. Other publishers and authors are purchasing cheap Macs
to do it themselves. One of my publishers (one I work for in admin...not one
I work with as an author) purchased a Mac to do it ONLY after I told him I
didn't own one and had no intentions of owning one. I use Mac at the schools
and Windows at home. If I had owned a Mac, he would have simply given me the
information and added it to my job list.
