[The French in particular regard books as an essential underpin of national culture. Britain has a lasting antipathy against "taxes on knowledge" and anything that will harm cultural products. My observation is that, outside the book business, books are just another commodity in American culture. But, in the UK, books are sold very cut price in many places, and the competition from Amazon has had to be met head on.
