There are some good reasons to do this kind of thing.  See
http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.88.868&rep=rep1&type=pdf
for an example.  We wanted to reproduce exactly a classic work of field
botany in which the typography was an important element.

Of course, doing it by hand does seem like a bad idea :-).
