I have a different list of 7 types of pirates, and this isn't really covered
on my list at all. But as far as their definition, I don't really have a lot
against this type. To be blunt, if you were industrious enough, you could
make your own ebook of the printed copy you own. As long as it's for you and
not further loaded on a pirate site, I don't really care if you do it.
Likewise, if you purchase the print copy and your best friend purchases the
ebook and gives you...JUST you and maybe one other...a copy, why would I
care? Even if you purchased books 1-3, and your buddy lets you read his
copy...JUST you and maybe another...of book 4, it's not hurting me, really.
It's no different than library lending or Nook/Kindle sharing. Par for the
course.
It's when you're getting your ebook copy off a pirate site where there are
hundreds of others picking it up who haven't purchased a darned thing.
That's when it hurts me. I'm all for common sense in anti-piracy. Unless
it's uncontrolled "sharing," it doesn't have a great impact. It's the mass
sharing I want to see stemmed a bit.
