My research revealed that college students would prefer this particular book to be in a format they could read on their laptops. The problem I see with this is that there would be few enough sales to cover the development costs due to widespread copying. Have I been misinformed that college students have little respect for intellectual property rights?

My previous experience with college students' lack of respect for intellectual property rights was with regard to the pirating of computer software. Educational institutions cracked down on that a bit. Later, major software publishers started releasing educational versions of their programs at very low prices. The low cost of these educational versions has probably eliminated much of the piracy because thinking students don't want to take the risk of being caught stealing something that can be bought cheaply.

Currently, a student who is doing some work from me needed some specialized software for which there is an educational version. When I suggested that I give her the money to buy it, she rightly asserted that she shouldn't be using the educational version of the software for commercial purposes. So, I bought her the regular version.

So, there exist at least some college students with morals and ethics.
