Too bad, since Harlequin is the only conglomerate smart enough to realize it
can work in larger markets and are testing it. Joseph, just because
something has been done for that long doesn't mean it's the best way. If
more conglomerates were willing to test it, they might learn the same.

I would add that Harlequin has a quite specific niche group of markets, and a licensing model that makes a large proportion of their authors almost workers for hire. It is quite formulaic for much of its output, and very strong on marketing and marketing innovation. Because it is so niche specific it can run what is effectively an old fashioned book club, where new books (often novellas) are delivered regularly on a monthly contract. It also aggressively seeks physical outlets of all sorts.
But whatever they are like, 'testing' is not a business model, but R&D. Whether, or how, they use their experience remains to be seen. and, as a single and for some decade or two fastgrowing publisher by marketing and by merger, it is hardly a big traditional NY publisher, nor I think out of the medium size.
None of the concepts are new. To give an Old Testament quote: there is nothing new under the sun.
