Except of course, he's missing huge chunks of the financial  
underpinnings that make those practice make sense.

In fact, he's making the same mistakes that sharp and experienced  
outsiders have been making for at least the 20 years I've been in the  
industry: he's applying the rules of thumb from other industries and  
assuming that they work in ours. Usually those outsiders end up buying  
or building a publishing house and losing their shirts, if they don't  
learn better fast.

Of course, if ebooks ever become a major component of the mix (call  
it, say, annual sales of $10 BILLION out of the $35 billion in the US  
publishing industry), that might change. But that's not where we are,  
and I don't think we'll be there for a few years, at least.
