Ebrary, one of the pioneers in aggregating books and other print content 
online, has been acquired by ProQuest for an undisclosed price. Founded in 
1999 by Christopher Warnock and Kevin Sayar, ebrary hosts more than 
273,000 digital books, handbooks, reports, maps, journals and other 
content from about 500 publishers that it offers to libraries and other 
institutions under a variety of services and platforms.  Warnock and Sayar 
will continue to run ebrary from its Palo Alto offices.

ProQuest buys California e-book, research company

The acquisition will make Ebrarys online library searchable through 
Proquests research software.


This marks the second acquisition for Proquest in as many months.


In December, the company acquired the Congressional Information Service 
and University Publications of America product lines from Dayton, 
Ohio-based LexisNexis.

In addition to enhanced discovery across ProQuest's platform, ProQuest 
intends to expand ebrary's "ability to support new e-book devices as well 
as broadening language coverage from its current support of major European 
languages to include Chinese, Arabic and others...as well as to accelerate 
the indexing of e-book content on its own all-new platform," according to 
the release.


The acquisition comes less than a year after EBSCO's purchase of 
NetLibrary from OCLC in March 2010, which gave EBSCO a similar opportunity 
to expand in the ebook market
