I suggest you download a sample first for free if you have any doubts about the quality of an ebook. That should cut down on being surprised by poor quality books. 
 
I've downloaded lots of free ebooks, and have been pleasantly surprised by not finding many typos. I do expect a few to appear, as in printed books, because it's a miracle for every single one to be caught no matter how many people go over the manuscript.

You said some books were riddled with mistakes. Did you mean mistakes or typos? Some of the earlier published ebooks did indeed have more typos than they should have had but the editing quality, if they were edited at all, was most of the time less than it should have been. And yes, this includes some of my books. There’s no excuse for later books to have more than a few typos, though, unless you’re buying self-published that aren’t gone over again and again..
