Another popularity contest. Absolutely agreed, for all the same reasons. > I have little trust for any voted award, anyway Also agreed, same reasons. > I've seen people discuss how to ballot stuff the P&E. Heh. Must have happened after I got the SF #1 for '3rd World Products', 'cuz I don't think I even know enough people to swing something like that. How many would it take? > Simply put, it wouldn't be worth it to me to pay to enter any contest run that way. If someone else nominates me, sure. Go to town and vote on my work. But, I won't pay to enter it. > Brenna Still agreed. If nominated, fine, but I won't pay to be read. Someone told me some time ago that it should always be the other way around. :) ('Money flows to the author') Tampa has art contests every year. From what I've read in a few newsletters, they have the same problem finding unbiased judges. Seems likely any form of artistic expression is going to run into the same problems. I think we should take a lesson from other events. Budweiser sponsors bike shows and bikini contests as advertising. Subjective 'judging' is involved; the EmCee holds a hand over a bike or a bimbo and rates audience enthusiasm. Cash prizes are awarded. Much beer is sold in the course of entertainment. Such contests are held at bike gatherings all over the country all summer long. Ebooks wouldn't be limited to warm, sunny weather. All we need is a pertinent sponsor to fund and help organize something big, bright, and bold enough to make some tall promotional waves among readers and publishers alike. Amazon wouldn't do it for anything but its Kindle. BN - ditto - Nook. Fictionwise is now a BN property, so unlikely to sponsor. Maybe a coalition of epublishers? How many are there? Failing that, a non-epublishing sponsor who might already be involved somehow in the arts? What about the SF conventions, not only as platforms for SF award ceremonies, but as sponsors? Godiva chocolates or Mary Kay could whomp up a contest campaign for the Romance authors. Any number of corporate sponsors might jump on the bandwagon for a chance at positive exposure. If Tampon and Chapstick can sponsor Nascar competitors, maybe they can also find room in their hearts to sponsor a literary contest.
