News *is* the NYT - plus a few offshoot activities. For MS Slate is *merely* an offshoot activity. And I am certain the NYT, and every other newspaper, is more interested in driving paper sales than in a web presence. What is clear is that a newspaper subscription gives full web access; but not the other way round.
'Free' has to serve a purpose. That can be belief in the idea, vanity, a sales pitch or an attractive extra. What it is *not* is a 'must'. For example, there are three options for Slate: as is; charge; or close.
