Hey Dej,

You can read our BBC News website with pleasure; no charge. It'll be up at least until the Director General needs/wants a new carpet.

The price of the daily paper has gone up dramatically. We abandoned them a few years ago, with much regret. But to put that in perspective, They were too expensive for most people until into the C20, and were only truly affordable for mass purchase from about the 1940s. This developed greatly during WWII, and the news on radio and in print and on the cinema newsreel were almost a habit forming drug.

Books, being occasional purchases, were popularised both sides of the turn of twentieth century, refreshed by the paperback [first Penguin] in the 1930s, and renewed after WWII. Their rise in popularity over the past half-century has been phenomenal. Taking all forms of book sales together, they are more popular than they have ever been.
