Jon,

That comment really made me sit up. We've all been aware of and commented on many aspects of the changes that digital publishing is and brings. I'd been thinking along the lines of 'the more things change the more they stay as they are' for publishers. 

Now I still think that is the case in many ways, though your comment will force me to think it through. But there are certainly a lot of rethinks about marketing, and about how to publish. But that has been the case a number of times over the past hundred years or so. Advances in print, paper, type, distribution and incomes have all had to be adjusted to. 

In the sense of that long vista you can probably see why I think of the process for a publisher settling into much the same set of components. I doubt if we will be certain how the web has changed things for another decade or so. But I'm betting publishing will look structurally remarkably similar, but with more distribution outlets.
