I've been saying this for years. Thank goodness someone stopped scoffing
long enough to realize it's true. There are 80,000+ small publishers and
self-publishers in the US alone, according to the latest I've seen from
Parapublishing. NO ONE tracks all of them, let alone the ones worldwide.

And it is a global market. I have a publisher in the UK and another in South
Africa, in addition to my US publishers. I've also worked with publishers in
Canada. As the administrator of a publishing house, I've dealt with authors
on five continents for a single company. FIVE continents. That's not an
exaggeration.

Many of the indies report their sales to no central tracking authority. The
only portion of their sales that MAY be tracked somewhere might be
distribution channel sales...or not. When dealing with "tracking agencies,"
there is a certain amount of overlap...and a whole lot of missing sales that
fall through the cracks of what they do track.
