Without direction by the court, I cannot imagine the labels paying a
penny to anyone else. But if the artists whose tracks are involved got
together, they could bring their own case for fraudulent conversion by
the labels... or some similar way of claiming. However, I would be
surprised if there were not clauses in the artiste contracts that
anticipated 'unusual' payments and their ownership by the labels!

It would need a dedicated and pro bono lawyer [certainly in the US] to
demonstrate that the contracts went against the letter and spirit of
copyright. Which they do, of course.

I am assuming the report is correct in this particular at least, because
that industry has a very poor track record over its 'supplier' [i.e. the
musicians] deals. And that is allowing for considerable nurturing of
talent as part of the provision to many artists - though that may be
more a thing of the past, than true of new and newer artists.

The report itself was an AP report, and was picked up by cbc
http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2011/05/12/limeware-lawsuit-settled.html?ref=rss
. AP has long been a reliable source of news, and would have teams
covering the courts.
