Indeed.  The automatically-generated "ePub" from the Internet Archive is
pretty raw.  They take the raw OCR, errors and all, and crunch it into
the ePub format, without taking things like page headers or indeed page
breaks into account.

However, I'm lucky enough to have a Mac.  I opened the raw Google Books
PDF in Preview, cropped it (you select the crop box on one of the pages,
then in the sidebar select all the thumbnails, then in the menubar
select Tools>Crop), saved it as PDF with the "Black and White" Quartz
Filter.

Voila!  A readable ebook in iBooks.
