The digitization of the music industry vs. the book world - 4 parts

  [I know this is an excellent survey in many ways. But I am 
disappointed that there seem to be errors and shortsighted 'history'. 
Things which caught my eye before getting halfway down the first page:  
78s were not vinyl, but bakelite, and played with steel needles; the 
startings of the 'traditional' music industry are better seen from the 
beginning of C20 and the wind-up gramophone, rather than halfway through 
- which might be better understood as the beginnings of pop music; the 
important difference between music and word is missed - music is mostly 
enjoyed in groups and crowds (beginning visibly with C18 in Vienna and 
the Strausses). Still worth the read - books are mostly enjoyed solo.]

[I don't understand this senstence: 'the magic of the CD started to fade 
away in the first half of the 90's, when most of the vinyl was replaced 
by a silver disc.' I assume he means the magic of vnyl faded?]

[The start of print is called the 'book world'. At least the reference 
to China suggests it. But China was 'printing' on cloth at least 9 
centuries before the date given, and we have Roman authors complaining 
of pirates two millennia ago. Difficulties too with he start of 'print' 
as we know it; Gutenberg's type inventions were the start of readability 
with moveable type. And *please* did no one copy check? Fancy putting 
Michael 'Heart'! instead of Hart.]
[I see Amazon's claim to have sold more ebooks than print in 2008 is 
repeated uncritically.]
[Thankfully I can praise this: 'You can only come to the conclusion that 
people want to consume (increasingly) digitally. ']

[And my first gasp here is the complete failure to understand the 
massive change in the book industry with the entry of massive numbers of 
new publishers and self-published authors;  this is significantly 
different from self-publishing by musicians in a largely performance 
industry.]
[In fact this seems to be an argument against the big six of New York, 
rather than the industry as a whole. There is also mention of big 
sellers; in everything this is the cream that floats on the fact of an 
industry, and not the proof of the idustry.]

[I find much of the comment here either showing higher knowledge of 
music, and/or very narrowly based. The claim that there is no pricing 
control in ebooks belies the impact of Amazon policies. The policies may 
be geared to lower pricing, but they are no less control that Resale 
Price Maintenance mechanisms.]
[Happily again another insight; ' This makes the emotional bond between 
consumers and carriers perhaps greater with readers than listeners. It 
could be a reason why the paper book might have a longer life span (in 
any market share) than vinyl and CD.']
[Throughout there is no appreciation either of the fact that a great 
deal of the publishing industry is concerned with non-entertainment, 
non-leisure. Music is entirely a leisure business.]

[I hope my comments have helped. Certainly I am concerned that all 
publishers and writers evaluate information that will affect their 
decision-making.]
