This really floors me about ebook writers. This ridiculous mindset that you are somehow limited in how you promote yourself and your books. The truth is that most of the same places that you use for print books, you use for ebooks. If you would like my marketing class notes, I would be glad to send them to you, but I can hit some of the short and sweet here...
All of the online review sites I know take ebook copies...most PDF, but some also review in (or ask for) ePub or Mobi/PRC. Depending on your genre, I would give you differing lists of where to send them. In addition, some print review sites will review an ebook, but possibly only if you provide them with a print ARC or at least a faux print ARC.
Yahoogroups, Goodreads Groups, Facebook Groups... Anyplace that readers hang out usually have BOTH ebook chatter groups and genre chatter groups where a certain amount of self-promotion is allowable. I’ve only met a few (maybe three) readers in the last 11 years that have gotten snarky and complained about ebook promo on lists not dedicated to ebooks, and they were promptly drowned out by the other readers who read both print and e and were interested in anything in their favorite genres.
You can market all the same places and all the same ways. If you go to a convention/conference, you can have physical promo items. I highly suggest things like mini-trifolds, pens, excerpt CDs, and do-dads rather than most other paper marketing. Of course, always have business cards with you but don’t expect a good return on them when left on promo row. You can wear a t-shirt for your title, unless it’s a professional conference (and yes...you can wear them on the street, unless you live in the Bible belt and write erotica or something).
You can advertise in the same places, but I especially suggest banner or cover ads on the larger online review sites rather than print ads in big magazines. The exception to that would be group ads in places like RT magazine, where you are only paying a percentage of the ad price and also getting a review of the book. If you write SF/F/H, you can get a line-item announcement of release by sending a print ARC to LOCUS, and LOCUS readers read that magazine front to back.
You can get into chats with some of the review sites or spotlights on the Yahoogroups. You can be featured (either for your book or as a guest blogger) on one of the better known blogs.
You can list yourself and your books on sites that specifically track books or authors in your genre.
If it doesn’t cost money (or a lot of money), and you have the time, consider doing it.
You CAN do signings for ebooks, but I’ve only done those in conjunction with conventions set up to handle them. Usually, you have some sort of paper promo to sign...faux cover flats or something similar. Some authors depend on the readers having Kindles, so they can use the signing software.
