Copy protection and Smashwords

In reading Smashwords' policy, it seems as though they don't have any kind of anti-copying protection on their ebooks, preferring instead to gently remind readers not to share purchased copies. To be honest, this has discouraged me from using Smashwords. However, I'm not sure how to go about distributing my book to retailers without them - has anyone formatted their book separately and supplied it directly to Apple, Kobo, Sony, etc?
My book's been available in Kindle format for over a year and is selling quite well, but I'd like to make it available in other formats as well (as long as it's copy-protected). Any advice is appreciated :)
