Mixed-mode book publishing model

In the olden days - this was before your time - the big publishers would release
a book in hardback, and then a year or so later, the paperback, at a lower price.
Are there emerging publishing models for the small publisher that provide for
the timed-release of their paper- and e-book versions of a publication?
