It depends on your comfort level. In most formats, it won't matter anyway,
because reflow will change what you do. In PDF, it does matter, which is why
I often have one base file for PDF and a second for other formats. I'd say
there is about a 40/60 split between publishers who don't leave them vs.
those who do, based on personal experience. Personally, I will leave widows
in paragraphs of text, but with quotes, I don't leave widows, if the widow
will be the attribution to a quote on the page before. In fact, I hand set
to avoid a PDF break of quote with attribution on purpose when pages of a
book I'm working on are quotes (blurb quotes or whatever). But as I said,
PDF is your only concern for that. Nothing else is a stable format anyway,
so let it ride, IMO.

I am working on my first e-book--which is a book of quotations--and I was
wondering if it is acceptable to leave widows in fixed layout e-books. I
would not do it in a print book, but I've seen several e-books that have
left widows. Is that standard e-book industry practice?
