I would have been more convinced that your own words did not equally 
match your description had you specified something.

I would just make one point in response to what I have understood you 
basic objection to be. When copyright came into being in 1710, it gave 
power for the first time to the creator. While business, specially big 
business, will always find ways to reap benefit from any situation there 
is one very great improvement today. The internet. This is enabling many 
creators to bypass all the limitations and costs of some aspects of the 
publishing industry.

It is creating an incredible expansion of cultural reach; the 
considerable increase in niches. This started with PoD, and now is 
massively improved with ebooks. It gives an independence of subject and 
treatment also. The problem, that you will hold your hands over your 
ears rather than hear :-) , is that it is totally dependent on the power 
given the creator by copyright. Just at the moment the value of 
copyright is coming into its own, you choose its destruction!

Otherwise it is back to patronage and printer/publisher power - or even 
to state control through paying approved creatives to write.
