Epub 2 v 3

I've been struggling to find epub2 guidance on navigation. I've found 
the epub3 ones at idpf.org.

Since most readers in use won't recognise Epub3 yet, does anyone know if 
changes to the nav coding will affect this? In other words, can I use 
the Epub3 information for content and illustration lists without it 
going amiss in older readers?
