As a former programmer of mainframe industrial computers, I know that they can do much better than what they have done with providing us with a device that makes the ebook attractive as well as useful. I am not trying to sell Adobe or any of their products, but as a user, I know that they have only touched the surface with what can be done with electronic books. Kindle is a business that earns many billions of dollars for the owner. They are trying to do what they do on the cheap, and it affecting the product we produce for them. Video, pictures, sound and resizing fonts is possible on a hand held device. Will they ever provide one for us? Only God knows.

It's not a question of better or worse.  It's a question of "different."  A main advantage of the Kindle approach is that the reader can with a single click change the size of the font for their convenience.  This can't happen with a PDF.  I recently read half of "Moby Dick" comfortably on my smartphone during a long train ride.  This could never happen with a PDF.
