BBC for value

The graphic and short note here indicate the growth of the BBC, even 
while its income from the licence fee [a unique way of offering 
independence from government and from commerce] remains static I suppose 
it is the first major subscription service!. The dollar equivalent is 
about $220 a year per household.

It is a major news, information and entertainment service competitor for 
all of us, on radio, tv and online. Outside the UK it is available in 
different ways. While PBS in the US shows some of its programmes, many 
others are licensed in the US and round the world commercially - which 
has been a growing income stream for decades; it is now also a 
distributor for other programme and film makers. It also has a book and 
magazine output, as well as sound and video [tape as was, CD and DVD] 
sales in its income stream.

Its business model is clearly complex, but also very successful. And 
that is even allowing for the compulsion of the licence fee; the range 
of services is impressive. [The World Service, the one that established 
BBC news world-wide reputation for reliability in WW2, is also still going.]
