Whatever happened to innovation in the publishing industry?

I'm not sure what Joe Wikert is saying here, since I doubt we agree on 
what "innovation" means. But what did make me react is the idea that 
there has to be dramatic change. While the Kindle attracted massive 
interest and sales, it was hardly an advance on previous dedicated 
screen readers. Nor, in essence, are subscription libraries new.

When there has been change that some describe as "disruptive" it is 
normal for a consolidation period to occur. Exploring the potentials of 
the ebook and developing them - not to mention simply learning to sell 
in the extended market place - seems quite enough to keep everyone busy.
