See, what happens is, this is not a superficial comment, and it´s not even especially nonchalant. It is severely orgasmic reading, dangerously lyrical, rich with appetizing densities and plasmatic character. It will impact on your mental cosmogony. It will definitely, ultimately, terminally change your life.

Read    Rayuela, Hopscotch in English translation. Read any, all of his short stories: El Perseguidor, in particular, a screaming masterpiece. 62 Modelo para armar, Un tal Lucas, even read his Nabokovian roadtrip with his mistress Carol Dunlop. Read his letters. Read him, period.

Cortazar is a rare instance of what Melville would have termed, by Pierre and unambiguous standards, a heurological nature. He is a fabulously infinite fellow. I have had the chance to develop some affinties to who he was in person, I have seen his handwriting, I have even had an article on him dedicated to me--he is my most frequent intimation to a pervasively rhythmic substrata. 

It stems in part, from the bizarre coincidences between me and the heroine in Rayuela, who is apparently, a rewriting of who I am, a very many good years before I happened, and it plays a little on the local unconscious, because everyone to meet me personally these last years has arrived, by some odd form of default, to the same spontaneous conclusion. The last drop to overflow the glad involved my having the question posed to me in a television interview...´´ this may sound strange, but has anyone ever told you that you remind them of La Maga´´.
Yes. All the time. 

And there is little to be done about it.

And well, no, as for me, I am Peruvian, and not a jack of all trades but a remarkably useless person--the difference between both is distinctly difficult, but becomes clear to the sufferer. 

I have, however, lived in Brazil, I love Brazilian music, Brazilian lit, I spoke Portuguese and will rediscover it´s lovely, lilting nuances, now that I live next-door in Uruguay. But Brazil nuts, are merely nuts to us, and apparently, not endemically Brazilian either.

Viva Caetano Veloso, of course.
