I wonder if the American press will bother to comment (other than in a
news report of what others are saying).

Some of the French press DID react editorially. Liberation and Le Monde
were mentioned in the Times as having done so. The latter is quoted as
saying "It is very grave to encourage the idea that something that is
real is in fact fictional. It's the beginning of totalitarism."

Apparently Le Monde must take account of the rather startling fact that
a significant number of the French public thirst for such a conspiracy.
(probably don't actually believe it--just wish it were true)
