I tend to agree with what I heard Paul Krassner say on the radio the other
day-- it doesn't really matter if the Bush administration let it happen or
conspired to make it happen, the result is the same:  whittling away at
civil liberties, institution of police state apparatus, ramp-up of defense
spending, more profits for defense industry companies and their
shareholders, extension of US imperialism, etc. Cui bono? Follow the money
and see who winds up with more power and control.  Pynchon covers some of
this territory rather explictly in _Vineland_.

That French 9/11 conspiracy book was creating a big sensation when I was in
Paris earlier this spring, lots of media coverage, tv and print. In talking
with my friends there it appeared to get about as much respect as such
conspiracy theories do here -- lots of people intrigued by the argument and
able to believe the bastards just might do something that evil, but also
willing to chalk it up to marketing for the book, and a relatively small
number of people convinced it's true.

History proves that conspiracy theories sometimes turn out to be true, so I
keep an open mind until we have more facts, take it all with a grain of
salt -- and in the meantime, take action to prevent the administration from
taking advantage of the existing situation.
