While this idea seems nice in theory, in practice, it will be completely
ineffective.

So we pick a day not to fly. What are people who were planning to go  
home
that day going to do? They're going to go home the day before, or the  
day
after.

Same deal with people who were planning to travel that day.

The net result here, assuming you can get a significant number of people
who would have otherwise flown that day to not fly, is a busy day at the
airports, followed by an abnormally quiet day, followed by another busy
day.

It's the same sort of logic that was debunked in this snopes article:
