I forgot (for the sake of future reference): this comparison is
between Perl 5.8.8 and Parrot 0.49.

The perl is from the Slackware package, ie a stock compile
without patches, configured non-threaded and with conservative
optimisation, but no other chanegs to the defaults.

Parrot is a stock compile configured with optimisations but no
other changes to the defaults.
