Never used Spanner but it is a great tool to have for geo-federated systems. AFAIK, Spanner-like transaction systems were invented in the 1980s but the infrastructure for distributing a coordinated time code was outrageously expensive at the time. Inexpensive hardware has made it practical. The big challenge for turning it into a generic product is that database systems have to be designed around a custom hardware stack. That limits it to companies like Google, Amazon, or Microsoft that are comfortable with extensive hardware/software hybridization.
