[Take a look at the tool (inspired by I2 detective) called NREN detective.
Basically it is a wrapper around well-known tools (iperf, ping ect.)
that can be used by end-users as well as network admins to track down
problems. It is fully configurable so that an institution (or other
NREN) can build its own version of the tool and it is cross-platform.
The results of the basic tests (IP4, IPv6, IPv4 multicast, IPv6
multicast, NAT, upstream bandwidth, downstream bandwidth etc.) can be
used to build composite tests like ('can I use the SURFnet
Videoportal?')
Peter Marshall comments: "I think that this last point is one of the best
features. The package includes a basic scripting language that allows you
to put together special tests. Also there's an authenticated auto-update
facility that allows you to keep the versions out one people's PCs up to
date. My current information is that the (fully) English and Solaris, Unix
and Linux versions are just around the corner. Later enhancements will
include facilities to better emulate a SIP or H.323 conversation."
The Detective is freely available and is published as open source (GNU
GPL License).
