To date the focus of most grid development has been on interconnecting high performance computers. But with the advent of state-full web services based on OGSA (Open Grid Service Architecture) or WSRF, large research infrastructure facilities made up of instruments, sensors and process control systems can now also be integrated with web service workflow tools. It will allow researchers to modify their science infrastructure on the fly to meet the changing needs of their research program. CANARIE has already demonstrated this capability with networks using the User Controlled Lightpath (UCLP) http://www.canarie.ca/canet4/uclp/uclp_software.html software that allows researcher to reconfigure networks on the fly to meet their specific science needs. UCLP uses the OGSA Globus Toolkit 3. The next stage will be modify the UCLP software to control remote research instruments and sensors.
