CANARIE is pleased to announce the CANARIE Intelligent Infrastructure
Program (CIIP). This program is designed to promote scientific and
educational collaboration in the development of innovative network
applications that exploit the advanced capabilities of CA*net 4, in
particular User Controlled LightPaths (UCLP).
CANARIE views UCLP as part of a broad range of related infrastructure
developments that we have called "Intelligent Infrastructure". CIIP requires
the use of UCLP and SOA to underpin new applications in areas such as sensor
networks, control networks and related commercial applications. The intent
of the program is to help Canadian industry develop a strong competitive
position in the application of SOAs in areas such as these. Of special
interest will be strategies and applications that relate to such business
models as supply chain management or process control systems that can
exploit the capabilities of broadband networks.
Projects should also have one or more of the following desirable
characteristics in order to more fully support the development of
applications that maximize the bandwidth and networking capabilities of
CA*net 4. Evaluation of proposals relative to this set of criteria will
constitute the primary basis for the decision whether or not a project is to
receive CANARIE funding.
The desirable characteristics are:
1. The use of Service Oriented Architectures built using web services and
web service workflow tools.
2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience by the applicant in the use of
these tools.
3. The "decomposition" of web services to the smallest possible practical
system component, rather than being a "wrapper" around an existing
implementation.
4. The potential to provide positive and self-sustaining economic
activity either through Open Source diffusion or commercialization. (Note
that when commercialized services or products are developed through a
project, the funding provided by CANARIE is expected to be recovered in the
form of a royalty on revenues).

Some examples of possible projects include:
1. An undersea HDTV camera controlled through web services and SOA
workflow linked by UCLP lightpaths to a remote viewer.
2. Web services control systems connected over a high speed network for
the management of buildings.
3. Oil and gas pipeline web services sensor and control systems linked to
a central management system over a high speed network.
4. Remote control and access of a synchrotron beam line and forwarding of
collected data using UCLP to a distant researcher.
5. Remote control and access to environmental monitoring stations
streaming and batch data through UCLP lightpaths to a central database.
6. SOA web services workflow to interconnect protein data collectors and
end users over a network with UCLP lightpaths.
7. "Vertical" grids to link resources from instruments through networks
to remote high performance

CANARIE est heureux dannoncer son Programme dinfrastructure intelligente
(PIIC), spécialement conçu pour alimenter la collaboration des scientifiques
et des éducateurs en vue du développement dapplications réseau novatrices
qui tireront parti des fonctions évoluées de CA*net 4, en particulier le
Commandement des routes optiques par lutilisateur (CROU).
CANARIE considère le CROU comme un des nombreux développements qui,
ensemble, constituent ce quon a baptisé l« infrastructure intelligente ».
Le PIIC exige quon se serve du CROU et des architectures orientées services
(AOS) pour mettre au point de nouvelles applications dans divers domaines
comme les réseaux de capteurs, les réseaux de commande et les produits
commerciaux connexes. Lidée est daider lindustrie canadienne à accroître
sa compétitivité pour mieux se positionner au niveau de lexploitation des
AOS dans les domaines de ce genre. On sintéressera surtout aux stratégies
et aux applications qui se rapportent à des modèles commerciaux comme la
gestion des chaînes dapprovisionnement ou les systèmes de contrôle des
procédés, en mesure dexploiter pleinement les capacités des réseaux à large
bande.
