[Joe St Sauver of UoOregon gave an excellent presentation on the state of
lambda networking in the US with a special focus on the National LambdaRail
at the recent Internet 2 meeting. I agree with Joe 100% that the
justification for lambda networks can rarely be justified by current
aggregate IP traffic volumes. There are too many network artifacts at the
campus and GigaPOP level such as firewalls and campus border routers that
often choke aggregated IP traffic volumes. Direct lightpath connections to
end users, bypassing the campus network, results in significant greater
demand for lightpaths and new perspectives on their capability and use. --
