For more information on this item please visit the CANARIE CA*net 4 Optical Internet program web site at http://www.canarie.ca/canet4/library/list.html ------------------------------------------- [Condo fiber networks for homes are similar in concept to the many condo fiber networks we have now seen deployed for universities, schools and businesses. Individual strands of fiber in the fiber cable are owned (or controlled) by the home owners, rather than by any centralized monopoly carrier. The homeowner then negotiates with a service provider of their choice to have their individual fiber strands cross connected to the service provider at a convenient neighbourhood node (which can be up to 15km away). The service provider may also attach an ONT at the customer premises and manage the fiber link on behalf of the customer. But since the home owner owns the fiber they can switch service providers at any time. Future scenarios of condo fiber will allow homeowner to deploy low cost CWDM systems from their home gateway and directly connect to multiple service providers at the same time using RPON - Reverse Passive Optical Networking. For more details see www.canet3.net/library/papers.html -- BSA] Bill, I thought you might like to know that the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corp has accepted, "in principle", the implementation of a community condo fibre model to allow for the provision of very high performance networks at reasonable costs with future growth flexibility. Very soon the TWRC will issue an RFI/RFQ to interested suppliers for the fibre infrastructure and operation of the network and related services. Shovels will be in the ground early in 2006 for first community to be "fibred up" and it will be developed in phases for up to 6,000 homes, a public school and other related community services. The next community will have a similar number of residences and approximately two million square feet of commercial and institutional space. The total Waterfront revitalization will evolve over a number of years. It will include 2,000 acres, over 100,000 residents, a major film studio and one of the world's largest urban parks, in addition to a great deal of commercial and institutional space see www.towaterfront.ca . If you know of any suppliers who would like to be on the information list, please let them, or me know..or feel free to publicize the opportunity. William G.
