Hi Bill
Well we didn't make early October, but yesterday we announced that we
have awarded a contract to build the SABRENet R&E network. Here is a
short synopsis. I hope this captures the items of interest. From our
point of view, a major angle is the collaborative nature of the
project, and in particular the full participation of the State
government.

SABRENet is South Australia's dark fibre Research & Education
network. The initial rollout of SABREnet was announced on 17
November 2005. The network will will be constructed through 2006,
and will comprise over 90km of new underground conduit and optical
cable, connecting the State's higher education campuses, teaching
hospitals and research precincts. SABREnet is designed as a passive,
dark fibre network terminating at the boundaries of participant
sites. Participants will be allocated unlit fibre paths, to which
they will connect their own active equipment. The network will be
owned and operated by SABRENet Ltd, a non-profit company jointly
owned by South Australia's three universities and the State
Government. SABRENet has received $6.5 million from the Australian
Government to extend of the national Australian Research and
Education Network (AREN) in South Australia. SABRENet will connect
to the 10gb/sec AARNet3 national R&E backbone in the Adelaide CBD,
and will also have exclusive access to a 10gb lambda connecting
Adelaide to Melbourne, which will be used for advanced computing and
e-research applications. SABRENet will provide a major boost to the
State's R&E sector, which until now has been largely dependent on
commercial managed ethernet services and microwave links.
