[The Quilt has been holding a series of workshops on deploying, acquiring
and managing your own dark fiber. Highly recommended for businesses,
schools, hospitals, government departments, etc that are thinking of
acquiring their own dark fiber networks -- BSA]


Colleagues:
You may have recently since this announcement from Jen Leasure, Program
Manager of the Quilt. There is much interest in learning and sharing
experiences with international organizations and entities outside the US
that are interesting in optical networking efforts and implementations.

As background, the Quilt is an organization consisting of 23 U.S. Regional
Research and Education Optical Networks (RON's).  In the past, The Quilt has
sponsored workshops which have focused on imparting experience of U.S.
community members in procuring and deploying fiber networks to other members
of the community seeking to do the same thing and learn from their
counterparts.
 
The Quilt has scheduled its 4th Optical Workshop in Fort Lauderdale, Florida
January 18-20, 2006.  The focus will be on topics associated with the
inter-connection of RON's (regional optical networks) and RON connections to
the schools and organizations they support.  One of the main goals of this
workshop is to learn from the experience of our international counterparts
on these subjects.  

 If you think you and/or others from your organization or constituencies may
be interested, please forward this email and note the request from Jen

As we plan our 4th optical workshop in Ft. Lauderdale in January, we want to
encourage attendance of participants who have attended workshops in the past
and attract new participants to the workshops.  Workshop themes and topics
have continued to build on previous workshop topics as exampled through the
themes below.
 
Workshop #1 - Broomfield, Colorado - June 04 - "So you want to buy some
fiber"
 
Workshop #2 - Durham, North Carolina - Dec 04 - "So you got some fiber, now
what?"
 
Workshop #3 - Newport, Rhode Island - June 05 - "So you have lit your fiber,
now what?"
 
Workshop #4 - Ft Lauderdale, FL - Jan 06 - "You and your neighbor both have
lit fiber, now what?"
 
In an effort to continue to grow our community's collective knowledge on
these topics, we are considering adding a pre-workshop #4 agenda topic which
would be an overview presentation of topics covered in workshops #1-3.  
 
As a potential 4th workshop participant and/or a previous workshop
participant, we would like your feedback to see if there is enough interest
in this overview to add this optional session to our agenda.  
 
Please respond to me by December 16th, if you would be interested in
attended this optional session to review the highlights of previous
workshops.  If we hold this session, it would be scheduled for the afternoon
of Wednesday, January 18, 2006.  The main agenda for the workshop would
begin on Thursday, January 19th at 8 am and continue through 12:00 noon on
January 20th.  
 
Also, if you respond that you are interested in this optional session,
please indicate by number which specific topics from pervious workshops
listed below are of interest to you:  
#1)  Topics focused on the process of procuring fiber 
 
#2)  Topics focused on various types of network equipment available, process
to procure equipment, and information on optical testing 
 
#3)  Topics focused on lessons learned in optical network deployment and
demonstrations of vendor and homegrown network management tools
