New optical networks provide an ideal foundation for profitable policy-based services that meet a large range of data and voice communications needs. Most of the proposed architectures eliminate or severely restrict many of the Internet's underlying designs, in particular the end-to-end principle. Another architecture that provides solutions for current challenges without altering with the Internet's fundamental design is being explored by several research networks around the world. This approach involves a new network management paradigm that could provide the robustness and security that commercial customers need. This new type of network wide area architecture often referred to as "customer-controlled networks" is becoming increasingly common among large enterprise networks, university research networks, and government departments. Customer-controlled networks are radically different from the traditional centrally managed networks in that the enterprise does not only manage and control its own internal local area or campus network, but also controls and manages its wide area optical network. The management is feasible assuming responsibility for direct peering and interconnection with other like-minded networks. The ACON workshop aims to push the control and signaling to the application level. Therefore, the focus will be on new signaling and networking approaches to cope with the application needs in terms of QoS and flexibility. The main goal of this workshop is to share the collective experiences of researchers, industry professionals, practicing engineers, network operators, and equipment vendors across many emergent areas in the optical space. SCOPE OF CONTRIBUTIONS This workshop aims to consolidate and disseminate the recent developments, researches and advances in the area of. Papers are solicited that present research, development and deployment issues and challenges, experimental results and applications related to applications controlled optical networks. The topics of interest include but are not limited to: o Signaling approaches for applications controlled networks: High level signaling, low level signaling, GMPLS, OBS JIT etc. o Optical networks adaptation to large-scale applications : E-science applications, GRID applications, transport layer issues, scheduling o Applications controlled networks and implementation/deployment issues o Applications, service provisioning models, traffic analysis on applications controlled optical networks. Examples include grid computing, scientific computing, storage extension, etc. o Traffic characteristics and performance analysis in applications controlled optical networks o Routing and scheduling for dynamic bandwidth control in the context of applications controlled optical networks o Protection, security, and scalability issues related to applications controlled networks in applications controlled optical networks o Innovative insights and expert opinions on future on applications controlled networks activities and requirements SCHEDULE OF SUBMISSION Manuscript Submission Deadline January 30, 2006 Acceptance Notification February 30, 2006 Final manuscript Due March 25, 2006 Instructions for Authors High-quality original papers are solicited. Papers must be unpublished and must not be submitted for publication elsewhere. All papers will be reviewed by Technical Program Committee members and other experts to ensure high quality and relevance to the conference. Authors of accepted papers must attend the conference to present their contributions. Paper length should be 4-6 pages in two-columns IEEE Transactions style, 10pt.
