[Interesting article by Peter Sevick in BCR that claims application demands
are outstripping Internet performance. Since about 2002, despite the roll
out of broadband and large investments in Internet infrastructure,
application performance has declined for the average user.  The major reason
for this is that the average web page and payload have grown much larger and
faster than the Internet infrastructure capacity itself.  This is especially
true for long distance and overseas applications.  I suspect that the
phenomena that Peter Sevick is witnessing has been well known in the
research community for many years - the bandwidth-delay problem with TCP for
large data transfers on long links.  Additional bandwidth is not the answer,
but better performing TCP protocols, caching and so forth. Thanks to Les
