{Here is a cool example of potential of cyber-infrastructure. Basically Dr
Lau is carry out a distributed experiment of a 5 span bridge structure where
the experimental facilities, computers and databases are linked between
laboratories in Taiwan and Canada using CA*net 4 and TWAREN networks as part
of the Global Lambda Integrated Infrastructure (GLIF). In the next phase of
the experiment they need to maintain very tight real time coupling with
extreme adapt rates so they will be using UCLP lightpaths -- BSA]
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
Jointly with Professor K.C. Tsai, Director of the National Center for
Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), and National Taiwan
University (NTU) in Taiwan, and Carleton University, Canada, we are
planning a series of multi-site hybrid seismic testing of a 5-span
bridge structure on Wednesday and Thursday Feb 22-23. The first test is
about to start now on Wednesday at 8:00 am (Ottawa time). For the
tests, we have setup a website for webcast of the test results in
real-time to encourage interested parties to participate in the
experiment and to observe the test results from all the test sites while
the test is progressing in real-time. The tests are pseudodynamic
seismic test. The first test will last slightly over an hour. Later
tests may take up to 2-4 hours to complete. You are invited to view the
test results at any time throughout the testing process.

In this multi-site hybrid structural testing, a 5-span four-pier bridge
structure is divided into 4 parts. One bridge pier is tested at
Carleton's lab, a second one is tested at NCREE, and a third one is
tested at NTU, while the fourth one and the bridge girders are simulated
by computer models. The tests and the simulations are carried
concurrently at the 3 different sites in real-time. The results are
merged together to form a single experiment of testing of the whole bridge.
