For more information on this item please visit the CANARIE CA*net 4 Optical Internet program web site at http://www.canarie.ca/canet4/library/list.html ------------------------------------------- Mashups for network virtualization for GENI researchers March 15 - Ottawa Teams from the University of Ottawa, Communications Research Center, i2cat, Inocybe Technology, University du Quebec a Montreal, Solana Networks and Carleton University today carried out demonstrations of the next generation of UCLP (User Controlled LightPaths) setting up live real time network virtualizations (Articulated Private Networks - APNs) across the CA*net 4 production network. The research teams demonstrated "mashups" where each network element such as, virtual routers, optical switches, virtual storage, instruments, wireless devices, time slices, lightpaths, and MPLS links can be represented as a web services and then linked together with BPEL workflow to create a network virtualized instance. Cyber-infrastructure teams and network researchers in Canada who are interested in research on a prototype GENI-like infrastructure can assemble these various web services into multiple network virtualizations (APNs) running their own protocols and services. More importantly UCLPv2 allows for the deployment of many several parallel virtualized networks - for example one network could be used to support traditional IPv4 routed applications, while another parallel network could be running IPv6 or some other advanced protocol. UCLP also allows users to "spawn" new virtualized networks, at any time, without requiring setup or permission of any central operator. This will allow for the easy migration of new services and protocols. This capability is already available on CA*net 4 today with over 30 separate virtualized networks or APNs used for various network research and cyber-infrastructure applications. It also allows researchers to carry out experimentation in various new services such as security, active networking etc The significance of web services for GENI-like infrastructures is that users no longer have to think of the future Internet as having a fixed or static architecture defined by network engineers or service providers. Instead the future Internet may be dynamic and agile where communities of interest can define on the fly, their own network topologies, protocols and services for their particular application or research. These communities can decide themselves whether the network will use virtual routers and/or optical switches and protocols that is important for their particular applications. In essence UCLPv2 extends the Internet end-to-end principle from the application domain to the physical domain. Already there are many P2P overlay networks riding on top of the Internet. UCLP extends these overlay P2P networks to the physical layer. UCLPv2 over CA*net 4 is precursor to the planned GENI network in the USA. Projects like the proposed GENI initiative are critically important as they are simply more than a future Internet testbed - they may very well be the future Internet!
