The CA*net 4 network is different than most other Internet R&E networks in that it was designed from the very beginning to support multiple concurrent networks (Articulated Private Networks- APNs). The National Lambda Rail in the USA has a similar network architecture. UCLP allows the owner of a given concurrent network to spawn child concurrent networks and assign these networks to other users as well as manipulate the link topology and the interconnection of virtual routers, switches and instruments (hence the expression "articulated"). With UCLPv2 this is all done through web services and web services workflow using a simple workflow graphics interface. Recently CANARIE provided a major government department - Environment Canada an APN linking the various Environment Canada computer sites across the country which demonstrates these capabilities (including creation of multiple child APNs) as further described in this note from Herve Guy - CANARIE's UCLP project manager. The network will facilitate the development of meteorological models for various applications that factor in all the conditions found in our vast and multifaceted country, in addition to hydrology research at our national laboratories. Environment Canada will also use it to test new networking technologies. In order to achieve it, 2 UCLPv2 servers, created CIIU (Communications Research Centre in Ottawa, Canada; the i2CAT Foundation in Barcelona, Spain; Inocybe Technologies Inc. in Montreal, Canada; and the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada) have been used (http://www.uclp.ca/). The first UCLPv2 server is run by CANARIE for managing CAnet 4s resources. CANARIE staff created the physical representation of CAnet 4 via the Physical Network Editor (ref. to canet4-physical-network.jpg) in UCLPv2, as well as its Logical representation, i.e. LightPath and Interface Web Services, via the Logical Network Editor (ref. to Canet4-logical-network.jpg). Once everything was in place, CANARIE staff finally created the Resource List for Environment Canada via the Resource List Editor. This Resource List is now hosting all the CAnet 4s resources required for deploying Environment Canadas new articulated private network. The second UCLPv2 server is run by Environment Canadas for managing new articulated private network, running on CANARIE infrastructures. The APN Administrator at Environment Canada, has imported the above-mentioned Resource List for Environment Canada (ref. to EC-Resource-List.jpg). Via the Resource List Editor, the APN Administrator could display and manipulate resources that have been given to them from physical network providers, i.e. CANARIE. In fact, the functionality of the Resource List editor is the same as that of the logical editor except that there is no accompanying physical network. It is meant for APN Administrator to use to display and manipulate resources that have been given to them from physical network providers, i.e. CANARIE. Resources in this view can be selected to create new Resource Lists, APNs or E2E Connections. Here the APN Administrator has decided to create/deploy and execute 5 APNs (please refer to APN-Sas-Tor.jpg, APN-Sas-Mon.jpg, APN-Vic-Mon.jpg, APN-Tor-Mon.jpg and APN-Mon-Hal.jpg). This is via the APN Editor, that the APN Administrator (or End User) could display, deploy/undeploy and execute/undo APNs. Before deploying an APN, the APN Administrator (or End Users) must choose the topology of this APN by selecting resources on the above-mentioned Environment Canadas Resource List that will form the different E2E connections in the APN.
