[A whole new industry sector is starting to develop in Canada and elsewhere
with companies who specialize in the construction and management of customer
owned and condominium fiber networks.  A list of these companies follows. I
encourage you to visit these sites as a lot of them have excellent business
case studies and other material on the advantages of customer owned

Pembina Trails School Division Turns on the Lights to a Dark Fiber Network

Fiber.CA Inc. designed and built a customer-owned fiber optic network for
the Pembina Trails School Division, spanning a large region of Winnipeg. 33
schools, 13,385 students and 961 teachers are now empowered with a
future-proof network delivering the latest applications, data and
collaboration opportunities from around the world.

Fiber optics allow Pembina Trails to select inexpensive Gb-Ethernet to
deliver a secure, reliable, flexible and scalable network. Voice, video and
data can all share the same network without congestion. Today, this IP
network along with centralized servers and storage provides a base
infrastructure for any divisional application or service. Tomorrow, this
network could host a next generation protocol over separate pairs of fiber
or optical wavelengths. Ethernet makes operating the optical network no more
difficult than operating a Ethernet local-area-network or LAN. Owning a
network that spans the Division is the best method to achieve the lowest
possible operating cost, just like owning the LAN inside buildings. This
creates in a fast return-on-investment, compared with leasing managed

- compared with only the cost of managed 10mbps circuits, Pembina Trails is
getting gigabit and will start saving in less than 8 years. As you can
appreciate 10mbps is not sufficient to centralize servers.
- with other cost savings such as voice (once fully rolled out), they should
reduce this period to less than 3 years.
- add increased productivity, reduced hardware and software costs, makes
this a no-brainer.
- now that their network is not constrained, after only the 2nd month of the
school year, their bandwidth usage already went up 3x.
