 [It was a pleasure to see the announcement for the call for the first GENI
engineering subcontracts to build the initial next generation Internet
prototypes.  To my mind GENI and similar next generation network initiatives
in Europe and elsewhere can play a critical role in defining and deploying
new Internet architectures that reduce the carbon footprint of the entire
ICT industry and university cyber-infrastructure to zero.  This is a much
bigger challenge than simple incremental energy efficiency improvements on
existing network and computer equipment. It means research into new network
and distributed computer architectures, routing, addressing, etc.

But not only can a next generation Internet projects like GENI reduce the
ICT industry carbon footprint to zero they can also provide tools to other
sectors of society to help them reduce their carbon footprint as well
through "bits and bandwidth for carbon" trading systems, "gCommerce"
etc--BSA]
