As the FCC starts a process that could kill the last few rules limiting media concentration and news corporations beat war drums for the Iraq attack show, media activists are gathering to strategize, educate and organize. To build connections between these events and help publicize the growing movement for democratic media, we are creating a printed brochure that will promote October as a "Media Action Month." This brochure and a companion Web site will list upcoming media democracy/ media justice events, contact information for media activism groups and include ideas for how to celebrate Media Democracy Day (October 18th), an initiative that is gaining participation across Canada and the U.K. This quick & simple project is one way we can aggregate our strength by raising visibility and providing context to the efforts of separate organizing groups. For the Web version we will be coordinating with other organizations who have related calendar projects. We are working fast to get this printed an distributed at several major gatherings at the end of September, please contact us ASAP if you have events to list or if you can help in other ways (see below). Onward! Inja Coates, Media Tank Aliza Dichter, MediaChannel WAYS YOU CAN HELP Contact: Aliza Dichter liza-7E1kLmqE+zdC/[email protected] and Inja Coates, [email protected] 1. If you know of events in October that should be listed, please let us know ASAP. 2. Ideas for celebrating Media Democracy Day? We're looking for activities and actions people can do in their own communities. Check out www.mediademocracyday.org. 3. We have $1200 committed so far. We need to raise another $1500 to take the project to the next level and really do it well. Help build the movement and consider co-sponsoring this project which will benefit all our work and those we work with. Contributions of $250 or more especially appreciated. (contact us about how to make out checks). 4. Help with distribution and promotion once the materials are ready. Let us know if you can distribute copies of the brochure at large gatherings, campuses, etc. If you can commit to downloading and printing copies of the brochure, we can deduct the cost of printing and mailing them to you. 5. Any other ideas for ways you can help out with this are appreciated.
