Friends,

Noam Chomsky, author of, among his many books, "The Myth of the
Liberal Media," spoke in Philadelphia yesterday at a fundraiser to
support democracy in media.

During this presentation he said one thing that changed the way I
conceptualize my activism:

"Many people say that it is the role of the Left to 'Speak
Truth to Power."
That's not true. It's the role of the Left to speak truth
AGAINST power."

In these troubled times, we need to do our speaking out. Now.
Actively. Loud enough to be heard in Washington. Loud enough to be
heard in Texas.

We can't let them intimidate us into silence.

Don't let the bastards grind you down!

In solidarity,

--Leon

"In Germany they came first for the Communists and
I didn't speak up because I wasn't a communist. Then
they came for the Jews and I didn't speak up because
I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics and I didn't speak up
because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me
-- and by that time, no was left to speak up."

-- statement by Rev. Martin Niemoller, a Lutheran minister
in Berlin, after World War II -- as a warning of what can
happen when people do not come to the defense of others
whose civil liberties have been taken away.
